The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
